Greenhouse
Tomatoes
Sow December to
January for heated greenhouse or February to March for cold greenhouse. A
minimum night time temperature of 10°C (50°F) will be necessary. Plant out
finally in 23cm (9 ") pots or growbags during February and March (heated)
or end of April to May for unheated greenhouse. There are a myriad of problems
possible, but good cultural methods and quick remedial action are the best
weapons.
Outdoor
Tomatoes
Sow seeds in
greenhouse end of March to April, harden off and plant out under cloches mid-May
or in open ground end of May to early June. Plants should be at least 45cm apart
in rows 75cm apart and staked firmly if necessary. Outdoor tomatoes will do best
against a south facing wall sheltered from strong winds. There should be plenty
of humus in the soil as tomatoes are hungry plants. Growbags are both popular
and easy to use once you master the watering and are a good alternative to open
soil. Outdoor tomatoes are much less prone to disease and pests than greenhouse
grown crops, but still need regular watering and feeding to achieve best
results.
After Care
To assist fruit set mist spray with
water, except during dull, cool weather. These operations are best carried out
around midday, but do not spray foliage under strong, direct sunlight or
scorching may occur. When the first fruits have set, commence feeding with a
proprietary high potash, tomato, fertiliser. Ensure plants are kept adequately
moist, particularly during flowering and fruiting periods. Avoid alternating dry
and over wet conditions, aim to keep plants evenly moist.
